Why we are in business
Our Purpose
We exist to reimagine commerce in ways that build a more fulfilling and lasting world. Etsy was founded in June 2005 in an apartment in Brooklyn, New York to fill a need for an online community where crafters, artists and makers could sell their handmade and vintage goods and craft supplies.
We are building a human, authentic and community-centric global and local marketplace. By building and supporting this people-powered economy, we hope to inspire global business practices that are sustainable, responsible and profitable. We hope to make the world a little more like Etsy.

What we look for when hiring
As you’ve probably guessed; Etsy is a place that values individuality and variety. We don’t want you to be like everyone else, we don’t even want you to be like us—we want you to be like you! So write to us, in your own human voice, and tell us what you’re all about and why you’re interested in a role at Etsy. What gets you up in the morning? What excites you? What throws your whole day off and causes you to pull your hair out?
Why you would want to work for our company
Working at Etsy means you can directly affect the lives of millions of people. Whether you create a new product feature, write a blog post or help someone open a shop, your work has an impact on someone’s livelihood and fosters direct, meaningful connections throughout the Etsy community.
Working at Etsy is also a lot of fun. Our culture is grounded in the maker spirit, and we put creativity, community and thoughtfulness into everything we do. We have communal lunches called “Eatsy”, learn from each other at “Etsy School”, and get creative together at the occasional “Crafternoon”. From New York to Melbourne, we’ve built our culture with care.
